Although we do not have much time to appreciate the surrounding area, its natural beauty,
the wildlife, and the array of sights and places to visit, we are seeing snippets of what is on offer here in Cornwall.
After moving in we soon realized that we had a pair of swallows nesting in one of the stable blocks and from the amount of flying they must have had babies in their nest. We just left them to it and after a few weeks, they left and have not been seen since.
From the rear of the house, we can see the rabbits hopping around on the top of the path to the fields. They are out most mornings but they need to be careful as a local fox made an appearance the other day and we think he had one of the baby rabbits before disappearing into the undergrowth.
He does look very fit and healthy with a big bushy tail so we expect to see much more of that particular animal.
Skeins of Geese fly over very regularly in Nanpean, wonderful to see.
The last couple of mornings there have been ‘Skeins’ of geese flying overhead with their amusing honking as they pass by. There were around ten the first day but this morning there were around 50 in two groups. a treat for the senses to be sure.
There are a couple of Robin’s that seem to have staked the area for themselves and they come within four feet of us whilst working outside. I tried them on some suet with mealworms but they snubbed their beaks up at that. We shall try them on some mealworms when we get back into St.Austell on a shopping visit.
We also have a colony of rooks who live in this area and most days they gather around the house and neighboring area and some days it resembles a scene from Alfred Hitchcock’s ‘The Birds’. Lots of black rooks everywhere you look.
In the fields to the rear of our fields, we have resident Pigs and sheep making their usual noises which gives a nice country feel to the place although they do not make a noise incessantly. To the right of our fields, we have visiting cows munching on the grass to their heart’s content and adjacent to them there are two horses, one large and a smaller pony. The larger one came over to us and eventually had a carrot that was offered. We shall keep an eye on them and see if they get used to us.
As for the surrounding area we are waiting until September before going out to visit the sights as it will be lighter traffic for driving around once the children go back to school. Cornwall gets very busy during August and unless you adore queues it is easier to wait until the quieter periods.
We did visit Charlestown near St.Austell as we went to pick up some furniture we bought and as it was just down the road a little we decided to go and see the harbour. We shall post on that visit separately as we got plenty of videos and photos to show you.
