WOW!!!!! July already…… Halfway through 2021 and it is going by fast. Weather-wise, it is a lacklustre
year as far as that goes.
It has been fairly cool and some of our plants are not too happy about that especially the Tomatoes which have curled up their leaves in disapproval If the cooler weather keeps up the Cucumbers, Aubergines, and Sweetcorn are going to be smaller this year which would be disappointing, to say the least.
Last night, Sunday 4th July we had an amazing sky which seemed to be on fire! We kid you not, the whole of the sky seemed as though there was a forest fire just over the hill and was heading our way but of course, it was not! The colour of the sky was dramatic and awe-inspiring.
All three photos were taken in quick succession over a couple of minutes and the light changed very fast in that time.
Well, that is enough about the weather for the time being, even though our lifestyle is closely tuned in with the seasons. In spite of the cooler many of our crops are doing so well with Loraine’s expert hands in control. We are picking so many Pea’s that we have to freeze most of them for future use and we have to pick nearly every day to keep up.
Our Garlic crop has been excellent and will keep us going right into next year as the bulbs store so well and we do use a lot of garlic as it tastes so good. Loraine has also produced her best-ever Broccoli this year with firm, large heads of pest-free florets that taste so delicious. The peas have gone bonkers this year and we are harvesting kilos of them for immediate use and many to store for later.
We have now installed some of our video cams on the hut, one facing each way so we can track and record any incidents, weather damage that may occur, and of course to monitor the wildlife. There are screenshots of each camera shown below so you can get an idea of what we can see through these cameras and any interesting things we capture will be shown on future posts.
Looking South over the present growing area with the cemetery just behind the top wall and from left to right, the church,
the community hall which is now a shop, and our house on the right.
This is from the front of the hut looking East to the ‘Cornish Alps’. The wall to the left will be started soon and this will form
the Northern part of the walled garden. The black area below will encompass the seating area, hopefully with things such
as a barbecue pit, etc.
Our Northern boundary lies where the trees are, the fruit area is shown below but you can only see the left side of it from
here so far. Our line of Hazel trees can be made out on the left of the photo.
Here we have the orchard view on the West side of the hut. The fruit trees can be made out in the background and in the
foreground is a newly built Laburnham arch that Paul has just installed on the path to the orchard. The round hole to the
bottom/right is a newly planted Rowan tree.
We can view the cameras from the house and hopefully we should be catching more wildlife in the future on these units. The photo at the top of this page is what a Laburham tree/arch looks like if you’re having trouble identifying it. Ours will not be as grand as this one for sure, but it will be pretty and practical as a garden focal point.
Enough for this quick update, hope you enjoyed it and we shall see you soon……
